Cortez «Phoebus»January 31th 2013 • 2xLP, Digital • THRT028

"With this album CORTEZ is again proving that you can get out of the habitual pattern of power trio (guitar, drums and voice), and still burps noise-hardcore fury and incandescent anger. The band recently reorganized itself with the arrival of Antoine Tinguely on the guitar (ex-Berserk For Tea Time), Samuel Vaney, former guitarist, is now supporting the band as composer / mixer.
Recorded partly in the REC Studio of Serge Morattel in Geneva, drums, and partly in their own rehearsal space, guitars and vocals, this new album is the result of hard work, giving the band big freedom in creation and the possibility to fully assume the production process. Complete independence in learning, creating and finalizing the record. "Phoebus" reaffirms the taste of CORTEZ for saturation, but also explores a wide range of possibilities. Like a threatening and corrosive mist the aggressive sound still remains intense, melancholic and emotional."

Primitive Man «Scorn»January 31th 2013 • LP, Digital • THRT027

Fronted by Ethan McCarthy of notable grind acts Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire and Death of Self, Denver, Colorado's PRIMITIVE MAN play some sort of blackened sludge/doom with hints of drone and d-beat in the vein of bands such as The Body, Thou or Khanate. An earth-shattering, bleak wall of crushing dissonance and pure sonic heaviness : "Scorn" is only the band's debut full-length, but it already sounds like one of the heaviest and most brutal records you'll hear for a while. Thirty nine minutes of pure, unrelenting destruction that will leave you bruised and bleeding.

Bone Dance «Self-Titled»October 15th 2012 • LP, Digital • THRT025

BONE DANCE, a ritually charged and menacingly DIY band seeped in all things heavy, is rising from the South Idaho desert with their first self-titled LP for Melotov Records (USA), Throatruiner Records and Prototype Records (Europe). BONE DANCE takes the grime and gravelly glut of the band’s previous work, the self-released Snakecharmers, and reevaluates not only its intensity, but also the band’s heritage: retooling the ferocity of hardcore, the technical acumen of extreme metal, and the minimal gauze of sludge and doom. This is the kind of tight, controlled, anvil-heavy music that only comes out of an area dominated by the Religious Right, the Conservative Coalition, and some of the most culturally repressive mechanisms in America. BONE DANCE acts as a document of this inheritance by time and place and on principle rejects all of it. As a combatant to the moderate veneer that glosses even the counterculture in their hometown of Boise, BONE DANCE have crafted not a shield but a weapon against the repressive devices they so clearly detest. By deconstructing typical sludge breakdowns, by retooling blast beats into searing grooves, by inverting a biblical poetic into a sinister manifest of their body politic, BONE DANCE forges a musical dialogue exemplifying the clash typical of the liberal-conservative head butting seen throughout misleading media; however, the band seems to reject even mainstream leftist views in favor of an utter desert-driven nihilism. BONE DANCE proves yet again that the frontier isn’t innovation—the frontier is misery.

Direwolves «Me From Myself, To Banish»October 15th 2012 • 12"EP, CD, Digital • THRT024

Hailing from Lorient (western France), DIREWOLVES merge modern hardcore, crust and screamo on their debut EP "Me From Myself, To Banish". Recorded by producer/sound engineer Amaury Sauvé at La Senelle, these six songs find the perfect balance between emotion and heaviness, reminding of bands such as Alpinist, Lewd Acts or Killing The Dream. After a self-released demo last year, the Wolves confirm their huge potential - don't sleep on them!

Ken Mode «Venerable»October 15th 2012 • LP • THRT026

Known for effortlessly blending noise rock reminiscent of old-school Amphetamine Reptile bands with the raw and aggressive nature of modern hardcore, KEN MODE has become one of the most devastating bands in the underground, following suit in the lineage of forward thinking heavy music to come out of the Great White North – what you might hear if Voivod and Cursed had a baby that started a noise-rock band. Songs like “Batholith” and “Book of Muscle” cling to the traditions of hardcore music that resonate with fans of Converge or Trap Them while “A Wicked Pike” takes on spastic noise rock elements, and “Flight of the Echo Hawk” pushes forth as a mind-bending instrumental masterpiece, clearly influenced by the post-rock movement of the 2000s. "Venerable", the band's fourth full-length album was produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge), mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side, and features layout by Randy Ortiz.

Cowards «Shooting Blanks And Pills»June 30th 2012 • LP, CD, Digital • THRT022

Gathering parisians with an already strong pedigree in dark and heavy music, COWARDS regurgitates gutter hardcore, unhealthy sludge/doom and nauseous black metal in "Shooting Blanks And Pills", their deeply raw and anxiogenic debut release. Only six months were needed to give birth to this full-length, monstrosity with a desperate urban feeling, bridge between the knife-in-the-heart crudeness of Eyehategod or Kickback and the majestic darkness of bands like Deathspell Omega or Thou. With a sound carrying smells of pissy streets and the dry blood you get for a sidelong glance, producer Francis Caste have perfectly catched the gist of these 38 minutes, recreating this forced apnea in a bile tank with a no frills approach. Cowards features current and ex-members of Sickbag, Death Mercedes, Hangman's Chair, Eibon, Glorior Belli, Dacast, Colossus of Destiny…

Birds In Row «Collected»April 15th 2012 • LP, Digital • THRT021

BIRDS IN ROW make hardcore punk with an utterly anthemic vibe. Vocals seethe with realness while a burly rhythm section pounds out a bulletproof, mid-tempo foundation worthy of Young Widows or Sweet Cobra. Much like Ghostlimb, BIRDS IN ROW convey lifetimes’ worth of emotion without ever sounding weak. The heart is laid bare but the spine is intact. Collected consists of the entire Rise of the Phoenix 7” and Cottbus EP, plus the first song the band ever recorded, “Phoenix”, which has not seen the light of day until now. All music on Collected was recorded by Amaury Sauvé at La Senelle Studio in their hometown of Laval, France, and mastered by Sylvain Biguet.

Plebeian Grandstand «Split»October 15th 2012 • 10", Digital • THRT023

Tolosian plebs and long-time-no-see swiss cross their swords on this exclusive 10” split, each band carving their grooves with an unique twelve minute-long track. PLEBEIAN GRANDSTAND confirms their hegemony in terms of frightening chaos : the ghostly “I.W.W.O.Y.T.W.Y.W.O.M” starts like a long and punishing funeral procession, just before the thunder strikes the cortege. Becoming less hardcore-oriented and more experimental - while always sustaining a rare intensity-, the band leaves their comfort zone with this hypnotic track swinging between sludge/drone and black metal. After seven years of silence and a full-length (“Initial”) that left a deep impression, “A.F.D.N.T.E.D.E.V.L.S.” marks the comeback of CORTEZ’s acrid and corrosive noisecore. Still bass-less, still as harsh as ever, the swiss trio delivers a massive piece filled with a nearly luminous imperial slowness. An opportunity to check that the band hasn’t lost its touch, entangling crushed rhythms and powerful emotional discharges.

Verdun «The Cosmic Escape Of Admiral Masuka»February 2nd 2012 • Tape, Digital • THRT017

Named after the most inhuman battle in the First World War, VERDUN (Montpellier - France) are one of those bands that are hard to label, merging the lines between sludge/doom and slowed-down dark hardcore. Heavy and dry riffing, neck-breaking groove, incantatory vocals and a strong psychedelic feel, that's what you can expect from the half-hour of their debut EP "The Cosmic Escape Of Admiral Masuka". Carrying a strong live reputation, VERDUN is definitely one of those bands to watch for any fan of Burning Witch, Electric Wizard, or Amenra; and by extension anything dark and crushing.

Initially released on tape in winter 2012, here's the reissue of CALVAIIRE's debut EP "Rigorisme", for the first time on vinyl and with a brand new cover art. Formed during summer 2011 in Laval, France, CALVAIIRE's aim has always been to inject a strong feeling of urgency into their abrasive form of hardcore. The four tracks of "Rigorisme" make no exception; captured by producer/sound engineer Amaury Sauvé during a rehearsal in january 2012, this EP defines the band's foundations : dark, suffocating, and always physical.

Comity «The Journey Is Over Now»December 8th 2011 • 2xLP, CD, Digital • THRT015

The Journey Is Over Now shows a band more ruthless and musically ambitious than ever before. Four tracks delivering 52 minutes of an oppressive but finely worked chaos : a maze of winding riffs and unique melodies. Recorded and mixed between Laval and Paris by sound sorcerers Amaury Sauvé & Sylvain Biguet, mastered by Carl Saff, this fine-cut monolith of darkness shows a band in constant soul-searching and who has been able to push their art in ways they never would have dreamed possible. Exhausting in their ability to bring fluidity and atmosphere to their extremely dense compositions, "The Journey Is Over Now" reminds that COMITY is, more now than ever before, a band impossible to pigeon hole. This is extreme rock'n roll, and nothing else.
